W. Barron Hilton was born in United States. Former WWII Navy photographer, Hilton began hotelier career as an elevator operator at father Conrad Hilton's (d. 1972) El Paso Hilton. Initially resisted following in dad's footsteps; founded Carte Blanche Credit Card, Air Finance Corporation and AFL's LA Chargers. Helped negotiate merger with NFL to create Super Bowl. Returned to Hilton Hotels; named president, CEO in 1966. Introduced gambling to hotels; Hilton Hotels was first NYSE-traded company to enter casino gaming industry. In 2007 sold Hilton Hotels to private equity firm Blackstone for $26 billion; personally netted $800 million from the deal. Now focuses on philanthropy, flying, fishing. In 2007, pledged 97% of his wealth to Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, which is run by son Steven. In October, awarded Fédération Aéronautique Internationale's Gold Air Medal, the organization's highest sport aviation award for his lifelong dedication to aviation. His Barron Hilton Cup glider competition attracts international participants, winner receives a week-long camp at his Nevada ranch.
