Viktor Nusenkis was born in Russia. Viktor Nusenkis gained the bulk of his fortune in his native Ukraine, where he owns two coal mines, a coke-chemical plant, and metallurgy works. He became the director of a Ukrainian coal mine during the Soviet era and was an early independent exporter of coal, despite communist rules. In 1993 he founded Energo Concern, to help state-owned factories organize trade deals. Energo quickly became one of Ukraine's biggest coal traders. He did business under the protection of Gennady Vasilyev, the former attorney general of Ukraine, who is currently trying to prove in a Cyprus court that he owns half of Energo. Nusenkis, now a Russian citizen, owns coal mines in Siberia. He has been very active in the Russian Orthodox Church since the 1990s and is one of its most influential patrons in both Ukraine and Russia. He founded a joint venture with Uralvagonzavod that produces the most advanced Russian tank, the T-90.
