Victor Gradin & family was born in Brazil. Victor Gradin's wealth comes from his roughly 20% stake in multinational construction conglomerate Odebrecht, where he worked for several decades. Gradin joined Odebrecht as its chief financial officer in 1974 and purchased shares in the company over the years, building up his stake. The font of his riches became the source of an ongoing legal battle, which began in 2010, when the Odebrecht family, which controls more than 62% of the company's shares, exercised an option to buy out all minority holders. The Gradins refused to sell, arguing that the $1.5 billion Odebrecht had offered for its shares was too low. In 2011, Odebrecht kicked Gradin off the board of directors. Victor's sons, Bernardo and Miguel, also left their jobs as Odebrecht executives. Bernardo was president of Braskem, the petrochemical division of the group, and Miguel led the Oil & Gas division. Both are now involved in much smaller family projects, primarily investing in alternative energy.
