John Mars was born in Jackson, Wyoming, United States. John Mars is #34 in List Billionaires People In The World. John and his siblings Jacqueline and Forrest Jr. (died July 2016) inherited stakes in candy fim Mars Inc. when their father died in 1999. He and Jacqueline each own one third of the company, which is being run by some of their children. The $35 billion (sales) candy company was founded by John's grandfather, Frank, in 1911. Mars also makes Uncle Ben's rice and pet food, including Pedigree and Whiskas.

The three men formed the successful jazz trio "Broomer, Mars & Smith" which actively performed throughout the 1970s
In the late 1960s he played the drums in the band John Mars and the Martians with bassist Kevin Cosman and guitarist Stan Baka
