Alfred Mann was born in United States. Al Mann, who died in February 2016 at age 90, founded or funded 17 aerospace and medical technology companies, including MannKind, which developed new therapies and drug-delivery technologies, and Second Sight, which was looking to develop a new prosthesis to treat blindness. Mann got undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics from UCLA and made his first big break with Spectrolab, a military-backed company that made the solar sells that powered the first U.S. space probes. He first cashed out big with Pacesetters Systems, which made heart pacemakers; it sold to Siemens in 1985 for $150 million. His firm MiniMed, which made insulin pumps for people with diabetes, was sold to Medtronic for more than $3 billion in 2001. Mann, the son of a grocer, lived in Los Angeles and was a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He was married with 7 children.
