Alberto Benavides & family was bornon 21 October 1920 in Peru. Alberto Benavides de la Quintana joins the FORBES list of the World's Billionaires this year based on the 27% stake he and his family own in publicly traded Peruvian miner, Compania de Minas Buenaventura. The son of a former Lima mayor, Harvard-educated Benavides founded Buenaventura in 1953. The company is one of Peru's largest gold and silver producers, with a market capitalization that exceeds $7 billion. Its American Depositary Shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Alberto Benavides, who is 92 and no longer sits on the board, holds voting control over the family's shares, according to company financial documents. His son, Roque, serves as Buenaventura's CEO. Another son, Raul, sits on the board of directors.
He was given the "Harvard Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2011, by the Board of Directors of the Harvard Club of Peru
After graduating from Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria in Lima, Peru, he went on to become the first Peruvian to graduate from the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, in 1944
